The DAACS manual set comprises 16 documents organized into four groups. The first document covers protocols for digitizing field records using the Project, Context, and Feature modules. The second group consists of 11 artifact-module manuals — Beads, Buckles, Buttons, Ceramics (Industrial and Imported), Ceramics (Local Coarse Earthenwares), Faunal, All Other Artifacts/General Artifacts, Glass Vessels, Tobacco Pipes, Lithics, and Utensils. Two companion manuals document DAACS Ceramic Genres and Patterns on transfer-printed and hand-painted ceramics. The final group describes protocols for recording Objects and Images.
Jillian Galle and DAACS Staff, Leslie Cooper, Lynsey Bates, Elizabeth Bollwerk, Jesse Sawyer, Lindsay Bloch, and Beatrix Arendt led the development of cataloging protocols. In addition to current DAACS staff and steering committee members, Monticello current and former Archaeology Department staff, Fraser Neiman, Jennifer Aultman, Sara Bon-Harper, Derek Wheeler, Donald Gaylord, Karen Smith, and Nick Bon-Harper also contributed to the development of cataloging protocols. Jennifer Aultman and Kate Grillo produced the initial versions of these DAACS manuals in 2003. They have been substantially revised by Galle, Bates, Bloch, Bollwerk, Cooper, Garcia, and Puryear in the intervening years.
